The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a US$41 million funding package to improve primary health care in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Lao PDR).
This includes US$30 million from the Bank’s regular funding resources, US$10 million from the Asian Development Fund, and US$1 million in technical assistance from the Community Resilience Partnership Trust Fund, administered by ADB.
“Expanding climate-resilient primary care in rural and climate-vulnerable areas will help Laos protect its hard-won universal health coverage gains,” said Channy Campbell, ADB Country Director.
The ‘Green Health Care Project’ will upgrade and equip primary care facilities and provide staff training to ensure service continuity during extreme weather events.
Key initiatives include improving water systems, implementing community climate adaptation plans, and training leaders, women, girls, and ethnic minorities on adaptation strategies.
This project targets 51 districts, including 14 climate-vulnerable districts, in five provinces: Champasak, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay, Savannakhet, and Xiengkhuang.
This project aligns with the government’s health sector reform strategy, the National Adaptation Plan 2024, and the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) goal, reinforcing Laos’ commitment to climate change mitigation and sustainable development.
Established in 1966 and owned by 69 member countries (50 from the Asia-Pacific region), ADB continues to support inclusive, resilient, and sustainable growth across the region through innovative financing and strategic partnerships.
