CARE Denmark is supporting a new project to strengthen livestock systems and improve livelihoods in rural areas of northern Laos, in partnership with CARE International in Laos, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, and the Lao agri-technology company AgCoTech.
The ECPPL commercial project was launched on 17 October 2025, through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding in Luang Prabang between Ms. Keo Amphone Suvannaphoum, Country Director of CARE International in Laos, and Dr. Xaykham Souksanith, Deputy Director of the Luang Prabang Provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment.
The project, funded by CARE Denmark and AgCoTech, aims to help smallholder farmers in Pakse develop more modern and profitable livestock systems by introducing a commercial veterinary service model and a training program covering both male and female livestock farmers to improve animal health, income, and food security.
“The ECPPL project is a powerful example of integrated solutions – strengthening food security, improving livelihoods.” and addressing environmental challenges.” “By prioritizing a gender-inclusive approach, we ensure that women, who are at the center of livestock systems, are given the skills and income they need to build household resilience.”
The project also supports the creation of verified carbon units (VCUs), linking better livestock management to global carbon reduction efforts. This approach is in line with Denmark’s emphasis on climate-smart development cooperation and engagement in Southeast Asia.
The project, which will be implemented in 26 villages in Pakxeng district until December 2026, is expected to directly benefit more than 14,000 people, including more than 7,000 women, and indirectly benefit another 9,800.
Dr. Saikham described the project as “an important step in strengthening our agricultural sector” and welcomed Denmark’s continued support for rural development in Laos.
