On September 24-25, 2025, Mr. Maithong Thammavongsa, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Laos, welcomed Mr. Sergey Lukashevich, the first Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Belarus, who visited the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.
The fourth meeting of the Lao-Belarusian Intergovernmental Commission on Bilateral Cooperation was held in Vientiane. Mr. Sergey Lukashevich, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, presented on Belarus’ foreign economic potential.
During the meeting, the intergovernmental commission discussed issues related to trade and economic cooperation, as well as the status and prospects of bilateral projects in various sectors.
In particular, in the areas of mechanical engineering, industrial product procurement, and finance, special attention was paid to measures to implement agreements reached at the head of state level.
The Government of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic signed a general agreement with the Government of the Republic of Belarus on export credit. This creates additional tools for increasing mutual trade between Laos and Belarus.
During his visit, Sergey Lukashevich met with Lao Deputy Foreign Minister Maithong Thammavongsa. The primary focus was on coordinating further joint steps to develop short-term political negotiations, including visits at the highest level.
Laos and Belarus reached an agreement on measures aimed at early entry into force of the Intergovernmental Agreement on Visa Cancellation for Lao and Belarusian National Passport Holders, signed in July 2025.
During the visit of the Belarusian Foreign Minister to Laos, trade and economic cooperation issues were discussed in detail, including consideration of the results of sectoral negotiations held on the sidelines of the Intergovernmental Commission meeting.
Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to continued mutual support in multilateral organizations. The two sides discussed humanitarian cooperation, particularly opportunities for training Lao students in Belarusian universities. Laos expressed its appreciation for Belarus’s friendly gesture in organizing an annual summer vacation for Lao Students in Belarus.
