Vientiane Capital have announced a ban on the production, importation, transportation, sale, possession, and use of firecrackers, fireworks, and sky lanterns, both within the city and surrounding areas, ahead of upcoming festive celebrations.
The Department of Industry and Commerce of Vientiane Capital issued the notice on 16 December, citing the need to ensure public safety, peace, and social order.
The ban also covers activities that produce loud noise in urban and suburban areas of the capital.
The prohibition applies to upcoming and future celebrations, including the International New Year, Lao New Year, Chinese and Vietnamese New Year, as well as company and shop opening ceremonies.
Authorities said individuals found in possession of banned items will face fines of LAK 100,000 (4.60 USD) per 100 grams. Those who use firecrackers or fireworks will be fined LAK 500,000 (USD 23) per item.
For legal entities and organisations, fines will be set at LAK 500,000 per 100 grams for possession and LAK 1,000,000 (USD 46) per unit for use.
Officials warned that enforcement measures will be applied strictly throughout the festive period.
The announcement aligns with earlier regulations issued by the Ministry of Public Security in early 2025, which also banned the use of fireworks that produce loud noise due to concerns over public disturbance and safety risks.
Authorities said the measures aim to maintain order and ensure a safe environment for the public during national and cultural celebrations, particularly during the upcoming Lao New Year.
The public has been urged to comply with the regulations and celebrate responsibly.
