Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone visited the 100 MW solar power project in Tha Sano, Bung Thale and Nam Bo villages, Kaysone Phomvihane, Savannakhet Province, on July 21, 2026, where he encouraged authorities and developers to advance renewable energy while ensuring sustainable local development.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by senior government officials and welcomed by the Provincial Party Secretary, President of the Provincial People’s Council, provincial and city leaders, project executives, and other relevant stakeholders.
The project is one of 12 priority government initiatives under the national programme to integrate solar-generated electricity into the 115 kV transmission network of Electricité du Laos (EDL). Covering approximately 158 hectares, the site is located about 13 kilometres from the centre of Kaysone Phomvihane. Kounxay Development Construction Co., Ltd. is the financial sponsor, Lao Development Green Energy Co., Ltd. is the project developer, and Amata Energy Engineering Co., Ltd. is the construction contractor.
The project also includes the construction of a seven-kilometre 115 kV transmission line linking the facility to the Pakbo substation. Electricity generated will supply domestic demand and be fed into the EDL power grid.
During the visit, the Prime Minister instructed relevant agencies and the project developer to prioritise the protection of agricultural land, recognising its importance for local food production.
He also encouraged greater use of solar panels manufactured in Laos to strengthen domestic industry and called for integrated land-use planning, including livestock grazing and other productive activities beneath solar installations.
In addition, he urged provincial authorities, city officials and project developers to work closely together to improve local livelihoods through job creation, skills training, land allocation, infrastructure development and broader community development initiatives.
