Laos has set a target to generate US$8 billion in revenue and attract 22 million foreign tourists in the next five years.
This new target is a key driver of economic and social development, surpassing the previous record of 20.1 million domestic and international tourists in the past five years.
This demonstrates the government’s commitment to promoting the tourism sector as a key engine for the country’s economic recovery and growth.
At the 12th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party last week, Prime Minister Sonxay Siphandon presented the draft of the 10th Five-Year National Economic and Social Development Plan (2026-2030), emphasizing that tourism will remain a top priority in the country’s economic structure for generating foreign exchange earnings.
To achieve this vision, Ms. Souansavanh Viyaket, Minister of Culture and Tourism, revealed that the ministry will focus on improving infrastructure and upgrading service standards to international levels. And develop regional tourism routes under the framework of the Lower Mekong Subregion (GMS) cooperation.
This goal aligns with rankings by international media, with Indie Traveller recently listing Laos as one of the “26 Amazing Budget Destinations for 2026,” citing its value for money, with budget-conscious travelers spending an average of only US$17-25 per day.
With awards from global media such as Travel+Leisure and Smart Travel Asia recognizing Luang Prabang, a World Heritage Site, and other natural attractions, the government is confident it can achieve its US$8 billion revenue target and fully elevate Laos’ tourism industry to a world-class level.
