The world’s longest rail journey takes approximately 21 days, running from Singapore to Portugal, covering nearly 19,000 kilometers across 13 countries and connecting Southeast Asia with Western Europe by rail.

The Laos-China Railway (LCR) is a key player in this achievement, linking Southeast Asia and China’s extensive railway network. The journey begins in Singapore and travels north through Malaysia and Thailand before entering Laos.

From Vientiane, Laos, passengers board the LCR train to Kunming, China, passing through Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city, then continuing to Beijing, China, and to Siberia via Mongolia, and to Moscow, Russia. It then continues westward through Europe, passing through Belarus, Poland, Germany, France, and Spain, before reaching its final destination in Lisbon, Portugal.

The 420-kilometer Laos-China railway connection, opened in December 2021, has transformed Laos from… “Landless” but “a land-connected country,” the railway has carried over 62 million passengers on the Vientiane-Kunming route and over 12 million passengers within Laos.

Most importantly, the LCR is a crucial land link between Southeast Asia and China’s extensive railway network, facilitating seamless travel from Singapore to Europe; without this railway connecting Vientiane and Kunming, the Singapore-Portugal route would be impossible.

A new railway bridge is currently under construction across the Mekong River between Vientiane and Nong Khai, and a direct Laos-Thailand railway line will soon be built, as part of Laos’ transformation into a regional transportation hub under China’s Belt and Road Initiative.

Challenges and the Future: While this route represents a unique global railway connection, geopolitical tensions pose challenges, particularly since 2022.
