Lisbon – Antonio José Seguro, the center-left Socialist Party candidate, declared victory in the second round of Portugal’s presidential election on Sunday.

According to data from the Portuguese Interior Ministry with 99 percent of the votes counted, Seguro won with 66.7 percent of the vote, while Andre Ventura, the far-right Chega leader, received 33.3 percent. Ventura conceded defeat.

Outing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa announced that he had called Seguro to congratulate him on his election victory.

A statement published on the president’s website also said that he would receive Seguro at Belém Palace on Monday afternoon.

According to the statement, de Sousa wished Seguro “success and the fulfillment of all the mandates entrusted to him by the Portuguese people, which will begin on March 9,” and expressed his full readiness to ensure a smooth institutional transition.
