Public Works and Transport Discusses Solutions to BRT Project Problems

The BRT Project Steering Committee meeting was held at the Vientiane Capital City Hall (VC) under the co-chairmanship of Mr. Lek Sivilay, Minister of Public Works and Transport, and Mr. Atsaphang Siphandone, Governor of VC, with the Deputy Governor of VC, representatives from the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, the Project Steering Committee, and relevant parties attending.

This meeting was held to jointly discuss ways to resolve the project’s difficulties and outstanding issues so that there is unity in implementation so that it can proceed as planned and be successful quickly, which is an important project.

In solving the problem of traffic jams, because the proportion of cars is currently increasing, especially in Vientiane Capital, causing traffic congestion during rush hour, which is a real difficulty in living. Therefore, in order for the project to be successful, it is emphasized that those responsible for the project should pay attention to implementing and accelerating construction day and night so that it can be tested and used as intended.

Mr. Nou said: The Bus Rapid Transit project is a new project that has just been launched, so many sectors in society still do not understand the purpose of construction and use, making it a difficult task to implement.
Therefore, it is necessary to raise awareness among all sectors to use public transportation, reduce the use of private cars to save fuel, save expenses, and contribute to environmental protection. In order for the project to be completed quickly, attention must be paid to solving obstacles and obstacles that are difficult to traffic on the roads.

At the same time, this meeting would like the participating sectors to discuss the shortcomings in the implementation of the project in the past and the proposals of the lenders for implementation that will create conditions that facilitate those who will use the service, while also focusing on advertising so that society can widely recognize the meaning and importance of the project.

It also proposes a meeting to review 5 issues to jointly provide comments on the implementation, mainly convenience for users, including parking, providing bus services on the side streets, expanding the passenger pick-up route to the general public, etc. Therefore, it is requested that all parties involved be proactive in jointly researching and considering all issues to make the implementation of the project proceed with success as soon as possible.

Currently, the construction of the BRT project is 88% complete. For implementation according to Notification 23268/YTHK dated September 26, 2025, the YTHK Department convened a meeting of the project committee, experts, and construction companies on the 27th. Demolition of the side of Setthathirat Road (Horkham to Maho Sod Intersection) 400 meters long, Dongdok Road (Fai Mata 450 Intersection to the entrance of the National University) 2,400 meters long, which will be completed soon.

The demolition of the BRT stations in front of the Kosi Hotel and the Wat Hai Sok area began on September 28. Both points will be completed within 10 days, according to a report by Vientiane Mai Newspaper.
