On January 8, Brazil and Mexico issued a joint statement condemning the US violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and rejecting the outdated concept of dividing the world into spheres of influence.
Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said he spoke by phone with Mexican President Cordillera Selvam about the situation in Venezuela.
This followed the US launch of a military operation in Venezuela on January 3, which resulted in the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife before their transfer to New York.
The statement said both leaders expressed strong opposition to the violation of Venezuela’s sovereignty and rejected the outdated concept that could lead to the division of the world into spheres of influence, reaffirming their commitment to multilateralism, international law, and free trade.
Furthermore, both leaders expressed their readiness to cooperate with Venezuela to support peace, dialogue, and stability in Venezuela and the region.
